Ask & Answer pt. 4

June 5, 2015

What's one thing you don't know how to do that you wish you did?

There are so many things! A real dream of mine is to be a writer, but getting published is something I know absolutely nothing about.  I'd love to wake up with a game plan as to how to make that dream a reality!

What kind of camera do you use? And do you have any favourite photography resources, or did you figure it out on your own?

I have two cameras. The camera that is almost always with me is my Canon SX110 (a point and shoot). My other is a Canon Rebel XTi.

I got my first camera for my 11th birthday and I've been taking pictures ever since. When I bought my Rebel from a friend back in 2012, I knew NOTHING about using a DSLR. Rob and Lauren's "Extremely Essential Camera Skills" class taught me everything I know about shooting in manual!

What do you love most (and dislike most) about the blogging culture/community?

My very favorite thing about the blogging culture and community is the sisterhood that has developed because of blogging! I have SOOO many friends that I've made through this little space. I also really love the way that almost every blogger I've ever reached out to has been more than willing to help me with ANY aspect of blogging that I'm struggling with!

The only thing that I don't like about the blogging culture and community is my inability to get over the old "everyone on the internet is a creep" mantra.  I've come to learn that there are TONS of non-creeps, but the fact that who knows WHO could be reading my blog never ceases to freak me out a tiny bit. :)

What's one thing you hope to accomplish this summer?

I'm working on learning how to grill. Thanks to a little research, I've done a pretty nice job on rib steaks, t-bone steaks, and pork burgers so far.  I'd love to try pizza and vegetables at some point.

  1. The community is definitely the best part of blogging! I love that I've met so many new people :)

  2. Loved this little peek into your life. Writing? You already do that! Go for the next step in your dream! You're young and that's a great advantage. I'd love to learn to play a musical instrument. I bought a Nikon D90 in 2011, I believe. It was being phased out then. I love my camera, but wish I could take a course in person since I need hands-on to really understand it all. I have the books and have read them, but it just takes me too long to figure out all the focal length, aperture, shutter speeds, etc, when I'm shooting! I love the friends I've made (and have even visited in person) through blogland. It's a fun place to be. ;)

  6. I love these posts!! I will have to check out that photography class...I still have trouble shooting in manual! And for the record, you should totally pursue getting published :-)
    My answers:
    1) Play the guitar. My Dad tried to teach me as a kid, but I was stubborn and had wimpy fingers (the strings KILLED), so I didn't practice. Now I really wish I had!
    2) I don't know if this is applicable to me, haha. But Nikon D3200, and I basically just google things.
    3) Love: community! And the general positivity. Dislike: I'm with you on being afraid of internet creepers. I never even look at my stats/how people got to my blog, because it used to creep me out immensely when I'd see people getting there by searching "Jayda [last name] blog" I mean, who's doing that?! (probably just my Mom because she never remembers the address. But still!) The good thing about blogging, is that it's so personal, and anything else I might dislike can be avoided!
    4) Perfect my vanilla ice cream recipe!

  7. I'm with you on loving the sisterhood here in the blog world! I remember when my older sister found out that I had a blog (a Xanga) back when I was a teenager and she was like "Are you serious?! Don't you know only creeps have blogs?!" In her defense, this was back in the day before everyone had MySpace or social media. So it was a foreign idea to share about your life anywhere on the internet. I remember just looking at her and in all my infinite 14 year old wisdom saying, "Um, I have a blog and I'm not a creep." ;)

I think you should totally pursue being published!

Aaand let me know how the grilling of the pizza goes! I've always wanted to try that!

    1. Being fluent in another language. I had a really great grasp on Mandarin while living in China, but that's been over a decade ago now and I haven't kept up with it. My Mandarin is pretty pitiful these days. I also took four semesters of ancient Greek in college and was one of the top students in my class with my language skill. But it's been 8 years since my last class and I haven't kept up with it like I should. And I speak a smattering of other languages (especially Italian), but I really haven't pursued fluency in any language in a long time.

    2. Nikon D7000. I started with a Nikon D5100 and I loved it too, but the 7000 is just so much faster and more professional photographer friendly with all the tools at my fingertips. :) Google has been my greatest teacher. Along with a couple of friends who are photographers who I asked lots and lots of questions. ;)

    3. Like you, I LOVE the blogging community. It's awesome. I don't know if there is anything that I really dislike about blogging. I did once get a really mean comment from an anonymous person. That wasn't cool. So I guess I don't like internet trolls who happen upon blogs sometimes.

    4. Tying up the loose ends on a couple of house projects so we can start the next big one! :)
