An Encouraging Resolve

Friday, March 03, 2017

Today I am going to join Renee for her link-up.  There is a new theme each month and this time around the theme is encouragement. Renee is the wife of a guy who sounds like one of the good ones, the mother of two little ones, and one of THE most encouraging people I've ever crossed paths with on the internet. She is really good at fostering community, connecting with people, and being 100% honest about how things are going.

February 23, 2013
Well, I sat down to write this earlier today and ended up typing up what turned into a 9 page document that was close to 2500 words long. I think it's really good, but it needs polishing and I'm not sure that a blog is the right place to share a piece like that. So, I'm trying again.

It's Friday night and I just got back from the grocery store. I live it up, you guys. I also went to the mall today. I was hunting for a navy cardigan or a reasonably priced dress. I came back empty handed. I spotted one navy cardigan, but it was more shrug than what I had in mind. I did try on a dress, but then I realized that it looked like a cheerleading outfit from the 70s or 80s. I put it back (I know you were wondering).

There were a number of older couples shopping together. The men wandered aimlessly while the women pulled different things off of the racks in order to inspect them. The music was not only annoying, it was actually raunchy. I may have reached the point I never thought I would ever reach...I felt like every single one of those men. The clothes were ugly, cheaply made, and over priced. The music was horrible. I walked from department store to department store and found that each one seemed to have the same wares to offer.

Tonight, at the grocery store, things were different. I noticed that most of the shoppers seemed to be men and many of them had their kids in tow. There were some people who came by themselves and every single one of them was walking with the kind of slow purpose that many of us make it to the end of the week with. I made my way to from the meat counter to the dairy section and then weaved through the aisles until I made it back to the produce. While I was shopping, my friend Abigail texted me a time or two and I smiled as I typed out my replies. As I headed to the check stands, I noticed that it was starting to get dark outside and for the first time all day I felt the need to hurry up.

How does any of this connect to the theme of encouragement that Renee selected for the link up? If I'm honest...I'm kind of wondering too. Today, I passed human being after human being. I tried on a dress that some of them made. I listened to song after song that entire groups of people worked to write and record and produce. I overheard tidbits of conversation. I waited in line. I exchanged smiles and silly jokes about Route 66 and the Autobahn. The same can be said for you. You rub shoulders with so many people each day. You may be lonely. You may be so busy that you fall into bed at night. You may be sick. You may be having the time of your life.

Wherever you are, whatever the days have been holding for you, there is a resolve that can inspire your entire outlook. It's from the first verse in Psalm 34 and it says, "I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth." Just four verses later, it goes on to say, "Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed."

Today, I worked on a piece of writing until I ran out of time. I learned that I'm not crazy about the mall these days. I went to the grocery store dragging my feet after seeing my brother and sister off to their play.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that what made today different was that I was blessing the LORD. His praise was in mouth. I can't say for sure whether or not I looked radiant, but I can promise you that it's my deepest hope that people see His glory reflected in my very presence. I have full confidence that my hope in Him is SURE.

That's pretty encouraging. I hope you think so too.

Open Letters: A Link Up

Thursday, April 28, 2016

I'm joining Julie of A Hopeful Hood to kick off her brand new link up. The main goal of this one (which will be held on the last Thursday of every month) is to give bloggers a chance to get to know and support one another by sharing posts featuring open letters.

Your letters can be anything you want them to be. They can be addressed to someone you know, love, and appreciate. They can feature your thoughts on some current events issue. They could even be sent to your teller at the bank or that stranger you saw when you were out grabbing coffee. Whatever the case, write them, post them, and then link them up!

* * * * *

Dear Sweet Old Couple,
You don't know it, but you pretty much made my Mom's day when we were all out shopping yesterday. We saw you hunting for a parking spot and the way you both reacted when my Mom offered you ours was something that kept us smiling all the way home. May something as simple as a good parking spot bring me as much joy as it brought the two of you!

Dear Summer,
I'm starting to really wonder what you're going to hold this year. I expect you to be unlike any summer I've ever known and if I'm honest, I'm not sure how to feel about that. I'm looking forward to the best bits and trusting God with the rest. There's no room for disappointment because whatever you hold passed through His hands. I hope I'm ready!

Dear Sister of Mine,
You are going to be 18 in just THREE days!!!! I'm stoked and shocked and sooo many other feelings all at the same time. I saw a little girl wearing an oversized t-shirt as a dress the other day. She was dancing and hopping and "sweeping" the sidewalk without a care in the world. From a distance, she looked just like you when you were that size. As I watched her, I went right back to the days when you were that little girl. Those were sweet days and somehow, they ebbed and flowed and brought us all to where we are today. Days are like that. They turn into years before we know it and we nearly forget them until something as simple as a little girl reminds us. 18 is almost here. I know there is so much going on. You are brave and thoughtful and determined. My advice to you is this: In the years to come, the best and most important thing you can do is to put God first. Cling to Him. Cling to His Word. And make sure that your hope is in Him. Thanks for being that little girl and growing into the young woman that you continue to become. I love you!

Now it's your turn!

The Rules Are Simple:

1. Add a link to any post in the form of a letter.
2. Comment on the post right before yours.
3. Link back to your hosts.

The whole point of this link-up is to form community and meet some new bloggers, so don't drop your link and run! Any unrelated posts will be removed from the link-up.

Julie is currently looking for future co-hosts! Be sure to drop her an email and let her know if you are interested.

Catching Up

Friday, March 27, 2015

March 24, 2015

It's Friday and Jenna is hosting a coffee date, so let's join her!

I can't share too much yet, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes in my day to day life. It's probably all going to turn out really good, but the unknowns can get the best of me. I'm struggling to keep my eyes on God and my heart quiet in Him. He is God and He does as He pleases. We can and must trust Him!

Let's reflect on some of the most recent good times!

* Last week my brother and sister's time in another play came to an end. It was so great to go to rehearsals, work in makeup, and then watch as each performance came off as a great success! This year, it was my brother's second solo that brought me to tears. My sister's solo made me smile so big. She ALWAYS gets the floozy and she knows just how to pull it off even though that's the exact opposite of her own personality!

* After patiently waiting, my bulb bed came to life! The hyacinths were first and then the yellow tulips followed. I'm eager to keep watching it fill up over the next month or so.

* I've got a "Bible Reading in 2015" update coming your way soon. Let's just say I'm making progress and the times there continue to exceed my expectations. This familiar book is a ALIVE and I'm so glad!

* We picked up sidewalk chalk yesterday and I can't wait to use it sometime soon when Heidi's kids come to visit!

* After sitting on the sidelines long enough, I'm looking for essential oil combos to diffuse this spring. When it was warm, I had the windows open. We've had to keep them closed up again because the cold returned. The air just needs freshening up.

There are two combos that appeal to me. The first is lemon, orange, and peppermint. The second is eucalyptus and spearmint. What are your favorites for spring (or any season)?

What has been happening in your life?

Around the Table: Chicken Tortilla Soup

Thursday, February 19, 2015

Today I'm joining The Quiet Place and Madison for a bit of recipe swapping! Last month, The Quiet Place began their "Around the Table" link up. This is a once a month link up that will feature different prompts all dedicated to our favorite recipes. This month's prompt is SOUP...

I bring you one of my go-to soup recipes. Chicken Tortilla soup is simple and it can feed a huge crowd. Since I always have everything on hand, I can whip up a batch at the last minute!

Ingredient gathering is where it all begins. I tend to use a lot dried spices, but feel free to use fresh onions, garlic, and oregano. You've got a lot options with the chicken too! You can use breasts, a pulled rotisserie chicken, or shredded leftovers from another meal. It's all up to you!

I wasn't joking when I said that this soup comes together quickly! It's basically just filling up a pot with the perfect combination and waiting for all the flavors to blend. It doesn't get much simpler than that!

The diced green chiles are everything! I've got a few people who always pick them out, but the flavor they lend to this soup is really the star of the show. Trust me. Don't skip the green chiles.

And there you have it! A recipe that all the people around my table love. I hope the people around yours love it too!

Chicken Tortilla Soup
adapted from "The Christmas Kitchen" by Tammy Maltby

hearting -Everything in that picture up there (plus some donut pans from my sister) is my favorite right now.  Let me tell you about it all...

My awesome brother got me the slippers for Christmas this year. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be like Dorothy and her ruby red slippers with these things, they are the best.

Books and nail polish are always obvious.

My sister got me hooked on Candy Cane Kisses and then my Dad gave me a little bag of them when I saw him in December.

Every winter calls for some extra moisturizing and Tropical Traditions has the remedy!

reading - A little bit of everything. So far I've checked off at least 3 of the categories on the reading challenge!

pinning - This sandwich, this dinner, and this summer DIY.

eating - I spent a few hours in the kitchen on Friday preparing for the superbowl and trying out my donut pans that my sister got me for Christmas! The kitchen was destroyed, but we got lots of goodies out of it.

Joy's Browned Butter Chocolate Glazed Donuts were great

My adaptation of these Lemon Donuts with this glaze was just okay. I think I need a better powdered sugar.

anticipating - My Mom's birthday is in 10 days!!!! We're going to work together to make this spumoni cake. My favorite one year old is about to be two in 9 days! On top of all that, I'm eager to get into my gardens. I'm going take the cover off of my tulip bed any day. Before I know it, the little beauties will start popping up

What's on your currently list?

I'm linking up with Anne and Jenna! Are you?

The Circle: Never Have I Ever...

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

December 21, 2014

This month's theme for The Circle is "Never Have I Ever..."! Leave it to Kiki and Amanda to come up with a theme this awesome. :) Seriously...When Kiki announced it, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites! I can't wait to read all of your posts.

It took me a little while to come up with my list. I tried to think of things that wouldn't be on yours...We'll see how I did!

Never Have I Ever...

Been to Panera Bread - I really want to, there just aren't any near where I live or shop. Someday.

Made potato salad - It's sort of intimidating. I do want to give it a go though!

Worn heels any higher than 2 inches - At 5' 7", I don't need any more help in the height department.

Done an actual cartwheel - I have tried and tried and tried, broken a toe, and been shown up by my Mom and Aunt Claudia in the process. It's just not meant to be.

Painted my fingernails bright red - When I was 4 or 5 my Aunt Claudia refused to paint them that color and told me that it wasn't good. 20 years later, I still can't bring myself to do it.

Fallen off of a horse - I've ridden horses a fair amount throughout most of my life and I'm hoping this stays a never have I ever FOREVER.

Managed to get to the bottom of who God is - This is by far my favorite thing on the list because it's what I get to spend eternity basking in!

So...Do we have any of these things in common?

What never have YOU ever? Link up with Kiki and Amanda or comment below!

PS - The picture I included is one from our recent trip! On the 21st, we had a big family get together at my Aunt Alice's house. SOME of the cousins gathered around to take a "we're rolling grape leaves" picture. I'll just be sneaking pictures into posts for a while! :)

The Circle: November

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

I'm so excited to announce that I get to co-host this month's The Circle link up with Kiki!!!

I met Kiki earlier this year and we have become great friends. She teaches pre-school and she has a serious knack for taking pictures of everyday things in ways that make them look beautiful. She is also the brains behind The Circle which happens to be one of my favorite link ups!

The theme this month is to share 5-10 of your essentials. What things make you you?

1. Reformation Study Bible - I received this Bible when I graduated from high school and it is something that plays a HUGE part in my life.

2. Walking and Photography - I snapped this shot during a walk on Cape Cod. Wherever I go there are two things that I always do: find a walking route and take pictures of things that catch my eye.

3. Reading - My favorite genres are literary fiction, mysteries, and auto biographies/biographies. I especially love reading outside.

4. Gardening - Thanks to Julie I use these gloves. Thanks to Alice I use steak knives. Thanks to both of them, my Mom, and my Grandma I have come to love growing flowers and vegetables.

5. Baking - My favorite room in every house is the kitchen. Cinnamon Biscuits are one of my go-to recipes.

6. Bags - I picked up this purse when I was supposed to be Christmas shopping a few years ago. I didn't "need" it, but it was THE perfect bag. I'm always carrying things for other people and I have quite a few essentials (remember THIS post?).

7.  Family Time - It's no secret, I love people. I love pulling out a board game and some snacks and spending time playing games with my friends and family.

So, what are the circles of YOUR life? I hope you'll join us by linking up!!!!
